Three's a Charm! Trawler Training for Three Days Aboard Sandy Hook
Red sky at night- Sailor's delight!

Jim and Andrea met us at TrawlerFest in Baltimore. After chatting with us about their goals for cruising, this Virginia couple flew in for three days of training aboard our trawler Sandy Hook here in Florida. Scroll down to get a birds eye view of what our three day trip can include.

(NOTE: We no longer charter our boat but are pleased to come aboard YOUR boat anywhere for personal training with you and your mate)

Living aboard while learning allows time to practice as both the captain and first mate including docking, navigating, anchoring and basic maintenance. Time aboard with us gives you all these important experiences to master as a couple.

After each day on the water we have a terrific opportunity to reflect on what cruising is all about....

Where are we going? Spending time with paper charts prepares us for the real thing. We'll share each chart book and all references for planning a successful trip.
Three days aboard allows us to traverse through the bridges of Stuart...Rarely will you find a 65 foot bridge lined up with a railroad bridge, immediately next to a draw bridge. The currents can be a challenge!
What a peaceful anchorage. Sandy Hook at the end of a great day of training.
Jim, Andrea, Chris, Alyse. We’ve just been beach combing and are headed back in the dinghy.
Keeping a log book is important to track fuel usage and determine engine hours. Trip planning is easy to plan when you can refer to your log book for past history.
Liquid sunshine doesn’t stop us from learning. It only makes us appreciate anchoring on a bright and shiny day….there’s always tomorrow!
Looks like tomorrow will be a WOW! Day and we aren’t disappointed.
Get ready for FARKEL!
Jim gets in the game with 500 points…those 2s aren’t doing you any good. A big aft sundeck allows dinner to be followed by more fun and games. Then in the morning we spread out the charts for navigation planning.
Practicing a bowline knot on the bow. Don’t try this at home!
What is this strange watercraft?
Shoaling at the crossroads. The colors are beautiful but indicate that the lighter areas are less than 2 feet deep. Better stay in the channel marked by the red navigation aids on the left side as we head out to sea.
Another very different kind of boat from Harbor Branch, an Oceanographic Institute on the Treasure Coast of Florida.
We’ve been learning CRUISING CONFIDENCE AS A COUPLE!
When will we welcome YOU aboard?
C'mon and get behind the wheel with confidence...and Captain Chris!
