New Training Videos

New Training videos from Ask Captain Chris are now available on Vimeo. Our Vimeo channel offers an online way to rent or purchase some great educational tips for new boaters. You will find our original 5 topics Locking, Docking, Anchoring, Bridges and Perfect Boat available both on Vimeo and DVDs. And now we are proud to provide even more ways to help you build your cruising confidence. New boaters should check out our fresh and originally presented topics below.

All training trips take place along the waterways of America’s Great Loop aboard a variety of different boats. Learning about different layouts, styles and hull designs is important but what we also learn while cruising each day is essential for the new boater to master. Navigation, weather, below deck systems are as important as mastering close quarters maneuvering. We do it all when you Ask Captain Chris to be your cruising coach.  Enjoy poking around our newest in the Ask Captain Chris collection:

Original Training Collection

Boat selection and operation techniques including docking, locking and anchoring are just a few of the many terrific topics included in our original video training series. Each episode can help the novice or seasoned boater become a more confident cruiser. Captain Chris’s training Video’s will make a great gift. Click HERE to learn what’s included in the titles below.

DeFever 49 Engine Room Tour

  • Join us below decks to tour the engine room of a DeFever 49 full displacement trawler. We start with a Sea Chest, a raw water supply design for ships rarely seen on pleasure boats of this size. This boat is equipped with twin John Deere diesels and a generator so there’s a lot to discover. Another great feature we review is an Active Fin Stabilizer system. We explain the fuel distribution system while we video the duel diesel fuel filters and a supply/return fuel manifold. Rerun the video a few times to learn more about your own boat’s systems. Maybe with a little practice you can trouble shoot issues before they become a problem. Want to learn more? Join us to hone your DIY skills in our 2-day Introduction to Boat Systems course in Vero Beach.

Endeavour 44 Power Catamaran – Training Delivery

  • Come along as I join the new owners of an Endeavour 44 Power Cat in Jacksonville, FL. Our goals are to learn the systems aboard then docking and anchoring skills in the Ortega River. As we explore the diesel generator we discover a cracked exhaust elbow. An especially important navigation tool to notice are the YELLOW DECALS on the ICW Aids To Navigation also called ATONs. At the northern end of Cumberland Island we encounter a little rain storm. Later as we cross into Broad Creek and enter Shelter Cove Marina we hear an engine alarm. Always an adventure.

Formula 40 Performance Cruiser

  • Prepare to cruise to New York City. I was Project Manager and able to video document a few interesting points you may want to do in preparation of taking your boat on a long range cruise. When you watch this video you will see how you can make the boat walk side-ward for docking and spin in very tight quarters. Watch as we check the fluids in the Volvo’s, generator and the PODs. Other systems tests include “burping” the air conditioner water system and launching the anchor. Join us aboard to prepare your boat for cruising.

Haulout and Generator Removal – What to Expect in the Boatyard

  • If you’ve never hauled your boat for services or even for a survey then this episode of Ask Captain Chris will prepare you for your first time. Join Captain Chris as he narrates the haulout of a 47 foot pleasure Yacht, as she cruises into the haulout well and is raised from the water by travel lift. The reason for this haulout is to remove a generator using a small crane. But your boat may have other repairs in store such as replacing a fuel tank or propulsion engine and it’s good to be prepared. Watch and learn…or Ask Captain Chris.

Kadey Krogen Trawler Training Delivery Part 1

  • This trip has some noteworthy scenes including a sunken sailboat complete with a WR Buoy, drawbridges, strong cross currents and crabbing the boat into a marina for the first night in St Augustine, FL. Our second day of this training delivery is delayed because of fog. Patience is rewarded when have a beautiful day of cruising up the ICW. Uh-oh. The afternoon brings another change in the weather as we get caught in fog again. Prior planning offers few options but luckily we are aware of a FREE Dock at nearby Sister’s Creek right on the ICW. Stay Tuned and Ask Captain Chris.

Kadey Krogen Trawler Training Delivery Part 2

  • Travel along with us up the ICW across the shallow Nassau Sound navigating around the dredges. Entering the St Mary’s River we encounter range markers and discover the buoys swap sides of the channel. As we cruise north into St Andrews Sound an afternoon thunderstorm is waiting for us. This creates stronger winds and higher waves than expected but this full displacement stabilized trawler chugs on. Finally, through Jekyll Creek we enter St Simons Sound and Brunswick, GA where one more surprise is waiting. Our bow thruster is jammed with debris and blows a fuse. Watch us replace the fuse and settle in for the night.

Cruising Goose Pond AL to Chattanooga TN – Part 3 of 3

  • Ask Captain Chris about our last day of this training delivery. We drop our lines and idle out the private channel of Goose Pond Marina. Our journey brings us back into the TN River as we head upriver for our final destination of Harbor Lights Marina above the Chickamauga Lock and Dam. Two more locks bring us through downtown Chattanooga and to our new home port. Surprise! Someone is in our reserved slip.
