Are you wondering which tools of the trade are essential to have aboard your cruising boat? Ask Captain Chris what tools of the trade will be helpful….and why.
Allen Hex Wrenches
Good Allen or hex wrenches are important to have aboard. This is one of those tools that I would go higher end vs bargain brand. The cheap dime store hex wrench may twist out of an Allen head socket and ruin the screw. Spend the money and you will be glad you did. You can buy the good quality brands in Metric and SAE, American fractional sizes.
Many Uses
These screws are becoming more popular in equipment aboard, especially on some dripless propeller shaft seals. You may also spy an Allen screw in your bow thruster zinc and some generator raw water pump covers.
Before attempting to adjust a dripless shaft seal read the owner’s manual. There may be TWO Allen head screws, one on top of the other to lock the bottom set screw in place. AND, see if the bottom set screw has been set with a Lock-Tight material, as it should be.
