Jim and Georgia bought a single engine 37 ft Helmsman Trawler and asked us to help them learn more about operating a boat this size. Their earlier boating was in San Diego where they sailed out into the Pacific and back.

Now cruising the Atlantic coast and next year the Great Loop they wanted to be savvy owners by knowing more about their below deck systems: fuel distribution manifolds, changing fuel filters, electrical power management when using their generator and potable & black water systems.

Of course Jim and Georgia also wanted to fine tune their close quarter maneuvering in this single engine boat. The traditional skills of backing a single engine boat into a slip are easy to master with a little education and a bit of practice. Remember, most single engine trawlers walk right in reverse. Use that to your advantage. (Check out the video below of them leaving the dock. Notice their clear and concise communications between mate and skipper.)

Next we focused on the fundamentals of anchoring, drawbridges, cross currents and sandbars. We were able to practice each situation during our time aboard getting them ready to cruise.

Nothing is complete until trip planning is discussed. After all, every day is a new adventure when you are looping. How far will you cruise tomorrow, where will you stop for the night? Anchor or Marina? Captain Chris introduced this soon-to-be cruising couple to all the tools needed for a perfect plan.

Invite Captain Chris to come aboard your boat and help you fine tune your crew's skills. Working together as a team with build your cruising confidence. Just Ask Captain Chris!

Can't you just imagine the wind blowing through your hair as you pilot from the flybridge?
Or maybe you prefer driving from the pilot house below? It is an amazing size pilot house for a 37 foot boat.
Learning together makes the cruising team more confident. Ask Captain Chris!
Helmsman company purchased the Mariner Brand so you may see the same basic boat called a 37 Mariner Seville or 38 Helmsman.
Easy access to the engine room either from the floor of the pilot house or from the day head walk-in hatch.
A view from the dock.
Too bad no one is having any fun!
Port side view shows how much room is available for bikes, dinghy and other essential water toys. So easy to get from the bow to the flybridge using steps- NOT a ladder!
